Pitch and Responses

Identity of Sheffield

Presentation:

This is my survey that I used for my presentation via SurveyMonkey:

Photography Pitch Questionnaire

 Response 1.

Q1: How well do you think my idea fits in with the theme of identity?
The architectural sense helps to create an identity for the city. It not only reflects the time it was in but also how much it has changed to create its identity.
Q2: Is there any other photography techniques that I might want to consider when taking my photographs?
Currently, you might have to consider different angles and distance of your shots.
Q3: Is there anything else I can add to my idea to improve it?
Create a different range of effects. Having the same transition effect seems a little repetitive.
Q4: Do you think my idea is achievable? if so why?
It is achievable because the locations and buildings is already existing so you are able to get a lot of resources.
Q5: Have I considered enough legal aspects?
The legal aspects have been well thought out.
Q6: Is there any buildings I should consider taking photographs of?
Everything. Obviously.

Response 2.

Q1: How well do you think my idea fits in with the theme of identity?
It fits with identity because you are using the identity of Sheffield and maybe the history behind them which could be really interesting. It's a really good idea.
Q2: Is there any other photography techniques that I might want to consider when taking my photographs?
Use a wide angle lens. Take from different shots.. close-up of the building of the different bricks, or get a building like UTC which combines 2 buildings together (Old and new).
Q3: Is there anything else I can add to my idea to improve it?
I said that before...
Q4: Do you think my idea is achievable? if so why?
Yeah, it's really easy but really effective.
Q5: Have I considered enough legal aspects?
Be careful not to get people in the photo, well their faces.
Q6: Is there any buildings I should consider taking photographs of?
The one of sidney street, near UTC.. maybe a old pub. The building across the road from UTC.. yas

Response 3.

Q1: How well do you think my idea fits in with the theme of identity?
I think that your idea fits the theme of identity, because it shows the ever changing identity of Sheffield
Q2: Is there any other photography techniques that I might want to consider when taking my photographs?
You may want to consider angles and framing when taking your picture if you want to get all the building and some of the surroundings in the picture.
Q3: Is there anything else I can add to my idea to improve it?
Respondent skipped this question
Q4: Do you think my idea is achievable? if so why?
I think that your idea is achievable because there is nothing too difficult required
Q5: Have I considered enough legal aspects?
Permissions for buildings
Q6: Is there any buildings I should consider taking photographs of?
St pauls tower, Grosvenor Hotel?

Strengths

One of my strengths was having a good idea where I could use a variety of different locations in Sheffield

One of my other strengths was covering all the legal aspects which I will need to consider when out taking photographs

Improvements

I need to think about different shot types, angles and techniques when taking my photographs so that they each look different my final pieces.

I need to think about different buildings I will be taking photographs of

Need to consider that there might be people walking in front of the buildings in front of me

My next steps

I will be adding into my legal and ethical something about that there might be people in the way of my photographs so I will have to go earlier or put some implications in to stop this. I will also need to add different shot types, angles and techniques so that my final pieces don't all look the same. I will be looking around at different buildings in Sheffield.

Going to the locations and seeing them and seeing how I can capture the image and even get up high and different angles.

LO2: Treatment

TREATMENT

Identity of Sheffield

THE BRIEF

You have been paid by The Workstation to create a photographic collection and promotional poster for an exhibition on the theme "identity". Each collection must have five final pieces of original photo graphics. In this unit you will take ten photographs using a different range of techniques, manipulate them to create final five pieces based on the theme.

CONCEPT IDEA

My idea for my final piece is to challenge the identity of Sheffield by taking a variety of pictures of old and new buildings around Sheffield with the environment/area behind it to show how time has changed and how buildings have changed and improved.

I will be using deep depth of field for my photographs with a small aperture, which will ensure that I have the whole building in focus for people to see, and the area, which is surrounding it to show how times have changed. I will be taking my photographs with a wide angle to ensure that I can get everything into the image and will be taking them landscape.

Buildings in Sheffield which I will be taking photographs of:

1. A.R Heat abandoned Building
This is located on Matilda street next to Niche

For the style of the photograph I will be using a wide angle shot with a standard kit lens where I will be using each side of the building to frame the photograph. I will be using deep depth of field to show detail on the building and around it to symbolise that it's old and run down.

2. Cheese grater building
This is located on Charles Street

When taking this photograph I will be using a wide shot with a standard kit lens where I will be stood quite a distance from the building in order to fit it in the photograph. I will be using deep depth of field in order to show the surroundings around the building which connote that it's a new building and the surroundings are new.

3. Sheffield Cathedral
The Cathedral is located on Church street

When taking the photograph of the Cathedral I will be using a wide angle shot with either a wide angle lens or a standard kit lens. I will be using a wide angle lens depending on if I can fit the whole Cathedral within the photograph. I will be using deep depth of field to show that the Cathedral is old and has been there many years but the paving around it has just been put down which is new so that I can show the difference.

4.  Sheffield Town Hall
The Sheffield Town Hall is located on Pinstone Street

For the style of the photograph when taking a picture of the Sheffield Town Hall I will be using a standard kit lens from quite a distance back from the building to take a wide angle shot where i will be using each side of the Town Hall to frame the photograph. I will be using deep depth of field in order to show the detail of the building itself which distinguishes it from new buildings as it is old.

5.  The Crucible
The Crucible is located on Norfolk Street

I will be taking a picture of the crucible both during the day and night to show the difference of the building where everything is lit up and night and it almost comes alive and the building is dull during the day.

When taking a photograph of the the crucible I will be using a standard kit lens with a tripod where I will aim to get a wide angle shot with people walking within the photograph so I can use them for a motion blur to show a time lapse from the building during the day to night. I will be using the edge of the building to frame the photograph where I will be taking the photograph with deep depth of field to show the environment around the building where it is new.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Bob, aged 53 has two children and loves being adventurous. Bob travels all over the world

With his wife and children and explores some of the biggest cities in the world like dubai and America where he aims to take pictures of some of the best buildings in the world. He mostly takes photographs of places in the UK whether it be old buildings which are abandoned or new buildings, Bob has been fascinated with photography since his early 40s. When he’s not out traveling the world taking photographs Bob is usually at his local pub with his friends where they play snooker and drink. He enjoys watching top gear on the television and playing on his Xbox One which he would play for hours on the weekend as his job isn’t quite as exciting as he would like it to be.

My target audience is aimed at a higher age group because of the fact that young people/ young adults wouldn’t be too interested in the changes of buildings but it would appeal to an older generation who has witnessed the changes between these buildings and how they have changed over the years.

People who may visit my exhibition according to the NRS will be people in classes A,B,C,C1,C2 as they live within or near the city and will be interested in buildings which have just been built with older generations being more interested in older buildings and how they have changed over the years. Children will be interested in it as they can learn about Sheffield even if they don't live there and will visit as some point.

EQUIPMENT

The equipment, which I will require, will be a Canon 650D which I will borrow from school or my own which is a Canon 600D. I will be using a standard kit lens for most of my photographs with the possible need of a wide angle lens when taking a photograph of the cathedral from the front as there are obstacles which will be in the way and I will only be able to go for far back. I will be using a tripod to put the camera on for some of the photograph to allow me to keep the camera straight and it will be easy to move about to position and without me shaking the camera.
HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS.

Permissions and release forms

Based on needing to get permissions we can avoid having people in our photographs by:

1. When taking the picture, frame it so that it's only the object in the frame to avoid having people in the photographs

2. Certain times of day for a public landmark for example, go at an early time to avoid a large number of people being there.

Gaining permissions isn't just for people in our photographs we have to think about locations as well to take photographs of.

Will need permissions of buildings which are businesses and on private land, but don't need permissions for public places.

We would know this from signs, or enquiring at the locations to check if it's private or public land.

 Key milestone dates:

1. Planning - Friday 17th April

2. Taking photographs - Friday 8th May

3. Editing photographs - Friday 22nd May

4. Draft launch date - Friday 5th June

5. Launch date - Friday 12th June

LEGAL AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS.

Copyright is gaining permission for somebody's intellectual property

Avoid using telephoto lenses in public because it can get you in a lot of trouble because it can be used to take photographs of people without them knowing and can zoom into their face without their permission.

Being careful to take pictures of children and children which we don't know.

Take into consideration:

  • Who is in the photograph

  • Is it public land or private

Legal and ethical

We have to think of representation because:

We can’t represent people in a bad way with different stereotypes by what clothes they wear, race, religion, age, gender, call, ability and disability

Don't want to reinforce different stereotypes /

If you take picture of a model and they aren't happy with what they're being used for so they should know that they're being used for. - Aware of what the photograph will be used for

- Misrepresentation . deflamitarey showing people in a way that isn't necessarily true of that model so you don't want to represent a person in a negative way which isn't them

In regards to taking photographs of the buildings:

Linking to copyright, legal and ethical section to the buildings I have selected to take photographs of all of the buildings can be accessed on public land and are all on public land with none needing permissions to take photographs apart from the Cathedral which only allows you to take a photograph of it as long as it isn't being sold for commercial use for profit for yourself.

CONTINGENCIES

My other idea would be to do the identity of an athlete. How I would show this is the days leading up from training to when they’re competing in a different variety of events for medals. The sport I would choose would be diving as I have a lot of friends who compete at diving in different events.

He has attended events like the Last Thirteen Summer and winter Olympics and other major events with his work being published in magazines and newspapers like the Sunday Times and Life Magazine.
Purpose
You might be able to find this picture online in places, which talk about horse riding because the photo is an entertaining picture of the sport from close up. It might also be found not only online but in magazines and newspapers as it displays a view which everyone else doesn't which is when the horses jump over the hurdle where as every person watching this is watching from the side and from a distance away. The photo illustrators a win for one of the horses and their riders.

Image analysis
The photo uses natural light; using the natural light shows the bright blue sky with an effect coming on it from where the sun is glaring from behind the horse rider on the left. It shows the horses on the left as being quite dark and underneath them from where the light isn't hitting it. The photo shows deep depth of field where the entire photo is in focus where we can see things like the trees clearly where they aren't blurred in the far distance. The photo is fit for purpose where is displays close up action of the horses as they are coming down from jumping and are about to land.

Meaning
The photo connotes the excitement of being up close and under the horses as they jump over the hay and are about to land with the photo making us feel like were there and actually watching it from that perspective. The photo shows the story of the riders battling to come first and to win the race.

Martin.B (2015) Available at http://www.bobmartin.com/indexbobmartinsite.html Accessed (10/04/15)

Fitness for purpose

1. In the foreground of this image we can see in detail the obstacle, which the horses have just jumped over. We can also see the horses and their riders and the sky in detail. In the background we can see lots of trees and a few buildings.
2. Rule of thirds has been used to make the photograph balanced with something interesting happening in each section of the image.
3. Deep depth of field was used for this photograph with a small aperture being used of f16.
4.Natural light is being used in this photograph to show the shadows clearly from the different horses with the light being shown through the clouds.
5.  A fast shutter speed will have been used for this photo with a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second as this is an action shot and it has been frozen.
The ISO, which has been used, will have been about 100 so that the image is less sensitive to light as the image is quite dark.
The image has used the frame from positioning it level between the fence at each side of the race track to denote the location that the action is taking place.

Charlie Waite - Landscape Photographer

Photographic Category
Charlie Waite is a landscape photographer with over twenty years of experience whose photographs have been held in private and corporate collections throughout the world with exhibitions in places like USA, Japan and the UK. His photographs have just recently been in Amateur photographer magazine series icons of Modern photography with his photographic style been considered as being unique.

Purpose

You might be able to find this photo in a brochure which advertises places for people to spend the day in the countryside and have a walk round all day and look at the different sceneries which that place has to offer. You might also find this photo online in places which show different landscapes so people who like going to have a walk and a look can go and take pictures and have a selection of places to visit

Imagine analysis

This photo uses natural light with the clouds creating a sort of effect on the hill and the fields in the distance as a shadow is created from where the clouds are hiding the sun. The photo shows deep depth of field where even the things in the distance like the fields and trees are in focus. The different contrast between the light and dark is effective from where the hill has a shadow effect on the left but is light on the right. Landscape shot was used for this photograph because there is a wide angle used where we can see a lot of what is going on there.

Meaning

The photo connotes a sort of achievement and excitement as you feel you've just walked up a big hill which has took you hours to walk up from the bottom and you turned around and have this huge scenery where you can see for miles everything in the distance the shadow from the clouds which is hiding the sun light.

Waite.C (2015) Available at: http://www.charliewaite.com/gallery Accessed (10/04/15)

Fitness for purpose

1. In the foreground of this image we can see in detail the grass up along the hill and the way that it's shaped. In the background we can see the different coloured clouds and how dark the sky is, we can also make out the fields, buildings and trees in the far distance with a shadow over them from where the clouds are above.
2. Rule of thirds has been used to make the photograph balanced with something happening in each part of the photo for us to see.
3. Deep depth of field was used for this photograph with a small aperture being used of f16 where we can see all the image in focus even the parts far in the background.
4. Natural light has been used in the photograph to show the different points where the sun is shining on the hill but where the shadow has appeared from the clouds and the hill, it shows us how different parts can be lit up while others have a dark shadow over them.
5. A slow shutter speed will have been used for this photo with a shutter speed of 1/125th of a second as the photo doesn't have anything moving in it but the photo will have had to be taken as the natural light is always changing and the sun could have gone back behind the clouds.
The ISO, which has been used, will have been about 400 so that the image is quick sensitive to the light so that it can capture it.
The image has used the frame from positioning between either side of the hills.

Adam Ferguson

Photographic Category

Adam Ferguson is a war photographer who has over 15 years of experience, where he has received many honours for his work with awards from World press photo, picture of the year international and he has contributed to different magazines, newspapers and articles like Time magazine, National geographic and the New York times. He has travelled to places like Afghanistan capturing the violence happening over there from three sides of the story with one being from the U.S army, another from the terrorists and another from just people living there. He didn't just focus on taking pictures of people but different landscapes, vehicles, protests, action, wounded and many others.

Purpose

You might be able to find this picture in places like online and in magazines and articles which can be shown in the news to explain and show the violence in Afghanistan is real and it is happening and troops are needed over there to help out and the public should shown support for them. The photo illustrates enforcement where the officers shown are trying to contain the situation where an incident occurred where one of them looks to be giving orders but the officers are there to protect and look out for anyone else who might cause danger.

Imagine Analysis

This photo uses natural light, with the smoke in the background acting as sort of an effect but it has actually come from an incident regarding a bomb, which has just gone off. The photo uses deep depth of field where all the photo is in focus as we can see all the bits of rubble on the floor and the buildings in the far back of the picture. The photo has been taken on a canted angle, which shows the disequilibrium of a war zone.

Meaning

The photo connotes danger with the people being up close and near the camera which makes them appear big unlike if they were taken from a distance which connotes their importance in the photo showing that they're on the front line in the war zone. We can clearly see the guns and bulletproof vests which connotes that there is a lot of violence especially when we can see the smoke clearly behind them and we can see that there may be possible shootings which might occur because of the guns which they're holding.

Ferguson.A (2015) Available at: http://www.adamfergusonphoto.com/ Accessed (10/04/15)

Fitness for purpose

1. In the foreground of the image we can see in detail the bits of rubbish along the ground and a leak of some sort, what our focus is brought to is of the heavy machine gun which would of the soldiers is holding whilst giving some sort of command and his face expression. We can see the other soldiers wearing heavy armour with guns, helmets and have ripped up and dirty clothes. In the background we can see smoke of some sort with different buildings, cars, street lamps and furniture on the side of the road.
2. Rule of thirds has been used to make the photography balanced with something for the person looking at the photograph to see in each section of the photo.
3. This image uses deep depth of field where we can see the whole photograph in detail even the buildings in the far distance; a small aperture was used of f-11 with a fast shutter speed.
4. Natural light is being used in this photograph to show the contrast of the bright blue sky with the smoke that has appeared from an incident, which has happened there.
5. A fast shutter speed will have been used for this photograph with a shutter speed of 1/250th or more because this is an action shot of the soldiers giving commands and responding to an incident.
The ISO, which has been used, will have been about 200 so that the image wasn't too sensitive or too sensitive to the light.
The image has used the building on the far left and then the bollards at the right side of the image as a frame. The photograph isolates the enigma of the soldiers in the middle of the warzone.

You might also be able to find this picture online advertising birthday party venue and you may find it on a site which makes dresses and suites showing off some of their designs.

Image analysis
The photo has used the lighting from a portrait photography with lights specially set up to be focused on the two characters at the front so they stand out from the rest of the crowd. The rest of the photo
has used natural lighting, which creates a contrast between the characters at the front and the rest of the image with s shadow like effect from where the sun no longer appears. This photo uses deep depth of field because although you can see the two people are the front clearly you can't really see the crowd that clearly but the photo is all in focus even the trees at the far back of the image.

Meaning

The two characters at the front smiling and holding the cake is connoting happiness for as it is one of their birthdays and they have just become a year older. The large crowd connotes excitement as they have turned up all for her birthday with the lighting where the couple is connoting that it is a happy and joyful day

Thomas.A (2015) Available at: http://angusthomas.com/Home/1/caption/ Accessed (10/04/15)

Fitness for purpose

1. In the foreground of this image we can see the two people holding a cake with one of them having their birthday, the light is shining on them and the lady in her dress and the man in his suite. In the background we can see a large crowd, which has turned out for one of their birthdays. In the background we can also see quite s few trees scattered around the location.
2. Rule of thirds has been used to balance this photo with it drawing us to the two people at the front of the image but also giving us something to look at in each part of the image.
3. The image uses deep depth of field where it allows us to see the full image, foreground an background in detail with a small aperture used of f16.
4. The lighting in the foreground for the two people St the front has used portrait lighting which puts the main focus of the photo onto them with a shadow on the rest connoting that it is less important.
5.  A slow shutter speed will have been used as this wasn't an action shot and could allow more light which is set around the people to be taken in do the shutter speed would have been 1/30th of a second.
